Customizing your Luxury Bedroom

July 31, 2014 By Mark Hunke

Just because you spend most of your time in your bedroom sleeping doesn’t mean you should ignore the comforts that a bedroom in a luxury home can give you. Whether you are buying a new home or renovating your current one, you should consider the tips below to make sure you get the greatest possible level of luxury.

Lighting

The ideal level of lighting in your bedroom depends largely on your sleeping habits. Getting a comfortable level of sunlight can help your mood and your health. However, you don’t want to make the mistake of doing something that would deprive you of sleep, because getting a good night’s sleep is even more important. If you sleep soundly, large windows can help you wake up in a pleasant manner as morning sun comes streaming through your window. If you have trouble sleeping, smaller windows or windows that don’t face east toward the rising sun can be beneficial. If the windows don’t fit your needs, you can also consider blackout shades to help you control the level of light.

Size

How big should your master bedroom be? A lot of people think that bigger is automatically better, but there is something to be said about coziness as well. For the most part, a room that is on the larger side can be made to feel more intimate with the addition of accessory furniture such as a coffee table or bookshelf. Wall decorations can also help you personalize your large room while also making it more comfortable. On the other hand, a smaller room means you need to make sure you use your space effectively. If your bedroom is on the small side, make sure you get a bed that is just large enough to fit your needs. The effective use of space in a bedroom can make you feel more at home.

Location of Exits

Think about the traffic flow in your bedroom. Where do people enter? Is there a second exit? Many luxury homes use a suite setup where the room has at least two exits and is possibly linked to a sitting room. If that feels a bit too fancy for your liking, you should still strongly consider a second exit out of the bedroom, since that makes traffic flow through the room much more easily. When you are planning furniture, make sure not to put anything in the path of potential foot traffic. Ideally, you don’t want your bedroom in a space that would get a lot of casual traffic, but you still want to make sure you have an easy way into and out of your bedroom.

People often underestimate the importance of a master bedroom in a luxury home. Where you sleep can have a huge effect on your mood and your overall health. Consider that you will be spending at least one-third of an average day in this room. Even if you are sleeping during most of that time, your health and wellness will still benefit from a comfortable environment where the space has been properly planned and utilized.
