The Most Expensive Homes in the Country

August 3, 2016 By Mark Hunke

As of July 2016, there were 26 homes in the United States on the market for more than $75 million. Some of them are relatively old listings, but there are three that have been on the market for almost two years. Here, you can find out why these homes are so very expensive and other interesting statistics about the most expensive homes in America.

most expensive homesSome Interesting Facts about the Most Expensive Homes

Aside from the three homes on the list that have been on the market for almost two years, there are nine others that have been on the market for over one year. That’s compared to the 41 days it takes to sell the typical American home. Data from multiple real estate sources shows that while 2013 was a phenomenal year for luxury property in New York, with 252 contracts signed for properties priced at $10 million or more, that number is falling. Though it climbed a bit in 2014, it fell significantly in 2015 and is still falling today. In fact, 18% fewer contracts for homes priced at $10 million or more were signed in the first half of 2016.

Gemini in Manalapan, Florida

Gemini is far more than just a luxury home. In fact, it’s a luxury compound that features a sprawling 62,200 square foot mansion on 16 acres of property. The current owners have paid just as much attention to the outdoors as the inside of the home, and there are some 1500 species of tropical plants on the property. It comes complete with a fully-furnished tunnel that connects the home to a variety of guest cottages on the beach and some of the most intricate treehouses ever built. The asking price? $195 million – the most expensive home of them all.

301 N. Carolwood Drive in Los Angeles, California

The home listed at this address is a brand new construction, but the property itself has quite the story to tell. It’s the site of Mon Reve, Barbara Streisand’s old estate. Some of the stars who have lived at Carolwood include Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, and even Walt Disney. It boasts a contemporary design and truly fantastic lighting on multiple levels, and it comes with beautiful amenities including a 10-car garage, 10 bedrooms, 20 full bathrooms, and an entire level dedicated to a spa. The 38,000 square foot home has a list price of $159 million, ranking it at the top of the list of the most expensive homes in the country.

Briar Patch in East Hampton, New York

The Briar Patch is located in prestigious East Hampton, but is set right on the coast of the Georgica Pond. It provides a country setting across 11 acres. The home was built in 1931 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Recently, the estate was redesigned by Peter Marino, who designs stores for names like Dior, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. It has a very rustic and warm look, both inside and out, and it’s only been owned by three families since it was built. It is roughly 10,000 square feet with six bedrooms, and it also contains a country kitchen, a three-story great room, and a four-bedroom guesthouse with a private drive. It’s listed for $140 million.

As you can see, the most expensive homes in the country aren’t all sprawling mansions. They’re indeed much larger than the traditional American home, but they all have their own unique personalities and charms. They’ve been on the market for quite some time, but the current owners feel confident that they’ll sell when the right buyer comes along.
